Milarepa: Saint and Poet;close
Click for closer view...
A unique thangka in limited palette, showing the 11th century saint and poet - Milarepa - in his mountain retreat.

The colour underlines Mila's story, he is said to have subsisted from a diet of nettles outside his cave and is traditionally depicted as a grey green colour. His story is an inspiration to what can be achieved in a single lifetime.

Milarepa was an 11th century ascetic saint. His name means 'the man who wears cotton' referring to his scant cotton clothing.

Milarepa was born to a wealthy family but was swindled out of his inheritance by greedy relatives.

Learning sorcery and black magic, he avenged himself, only to become filled with remorse later. He sought out Marpa, a great lama, and tried to become a student.

Marpa set him great and frustrating tasks and it was only down to Milarepa's unquestioning faith and steadfastness that eventually cleansed his bad karma and made him ready for Marpa's spiritual guidance.

Milarepa composed songs to explain the buddhist teachings to the lay people and is greatly admired by tibetans because he was a lay person himself, who actually managed to obtain enlightenment in one lifetime.
