True offerings are from the heart with no attachment or regret. For every action, there is a result; positive, neutral or negative. Buddhists try to ensure that all their actions fall into the first two categories. However, an action stems from a motivation and this motivation is equally as important. A positive action motivated by desire can be self cherishing and ultimately self harming. This is one reason why the water offering is used, as traditionally water was available free on earth to most people, so the chances of your offering harbouring regret or worry is dramatically reduced, thereby increasing its meritous value.
