INFORMATION:

One of the most well known and popular deities of Tibetan Buddhism, Chenresig (Avalokitesvara in sanskrit) literally means 'one who sees all'. He symbolises the compassionate nature of the whole universe and all sentient beings, and reminds us of the path to liberation from unpure thoughts and deeds.

Legend has it that he was a disciple of the Buddha, and that he made a vow to assist all beings and put their welfare before his own peace or happiness. His mantra is one of the most well known, om mani padme hum.

He is particularly associated with Tibet, where he is the patron deity and the Dalai Lama's are considered to be incarnations of Chenresig. Chenresig has several manifestations, the most popular being the four armed, but he can be visualised with eight or one thousand arms.
