Brocading
Tibetan art is traditionally framed in borders of silk brocade - this material is usually woven in China or Varanasi, India and commonly depicts chinese motifs or traditional tibetan designs.

Framing the painting is a lengthy process and requires great skill to end up with a straight hanging piece of art. A silk cover is also made which will protect the painting when rolled or may be gathered up to display the painting when hung on the wall.
Samples of brocades favoured by a living tradition. These are the reworked tibetan design or khadi. There are however many bright and bold styles of brocade but we personally feel these detract somewhat from the paintings and use more muted brocades.

Prices depend on quality of brocade chosen; size of painting and number of colour borders requested. As a rough guide a 18" x 12" thangka painting with one border will start from around £75.
